Frequently Asked Questions

Casters

  • How do hard caster wheels and soft caster wheels differ?

Safe chair movement requires the appropriate amount of traction, and that depends on the hardness or softness of the floor and the wheels. To put it simply, carpeting and soft flooring require hard wheels made of nylon, hard rubber, vinyl, or other hard plastic compounds. Meanwhile, hardwood, tile, vinyl, plastic floor mats, and linoleum flooring require soft wheels made from soft rubber or urethane. These softer compounds are resilient, allow them to grip hard floors, and provide a smoother and safer ride.

  • Which caster is best for high pile carpeting?

We recommend Mercury style single wheel casters with 2-1/2″ tapered hard wheels for high pile carpeting. However, when the pile is dense or the padding is soft, a chair mat and soft wheel casters is the only solution for smooth rolling.

  • Which caster wheel should I use on hard floors?

Soft wheels are a better choice on chair mats, wood floors, tile or linoleum - they are more resilient and provide a smoother and safer ride. Hard wheels on these harder surfaces can not only increase the chances for accidents or injuries due to faster rolling, but they can also crack or damage floor or chair mat.

  • Will any casters work on both hard floors and carpeting?

The Superball Caster is a dual purpose wheel caster that will work on hard floors and chair mats as well as low pile commercial grade carpeting. It was created for both surface types and we recommend it for varied use.

  • Which caster is best for heavier-set individuals?

Several caster are designed to support more than 100 pounds per wheel: Twinstar Casters (120 lbs), Futura Casters (120 lbs) and Duet Caster (110 lbs) styles. Other caster models that we carry support 75 pounds per wheel.

  • What color casters do you carry?

Most caster styles come in various finishes, including Black, Antique Copper, English Antique Brass, Zinc, Bright Chrome, Nickel and Bright Brass. All caster styles except Dual Wheel Duets, Futuras, and Safety Casters are the exception. All caster wheels are black, except the standard 2″ single wheel caster, which is also available in gray.

  • Are your wheels non-marking?

Due to new technology, black wheels should no longer mark floor surfaces, so you should have peace of mind with any wheel selection you make. However, the standard 2″ single wheel is available in a gray-colored non-marking wheel, as well.

  • How can I tell if a caster wheel is soft or hard?

You cannot tell the type of caster wheel it is by just looking at its appearance. However, try holding the caster in your hand and placing your fingernail into the wheel. If you feel any “give,” then it is a soft wheel. A hard wheel would not have any give or resilience.

  • What are standard and oversized necks?

Standard neck (5/8″ dia.) casters are form-fitting and will fit all chair styles. Oversized neck casters are used to make the chair base and casters look like one unified piece.

  • Do I need a specific caster for a light-colored floor?

Any soft wheel caster will work on light colored tile or linoleum.

Safety

  • Safety is our bottom line!

We take safety seriously, and our goal is to provide you with products that will help prevent accidents, minimize hazards, and equip your office to become a safer and more productive environment.

  • Why is proper wheel selection important?

Choosing the correct caster wheel for your flooring type is essential to help prevent user injury. When hard casters are used on hard flooring, there is not enough friction, leading to excessively rapid movement when the user moves or rises from the chair. The chair will “skate” quickly instead of gliding smoothly. It can also cause the user excess muscle strain while seated. On the other hand, using soft wheels on soft flooring causes too much friction and resistance, leading to muscle strain and difficulty moving the chair. This is why soft wheels are recommended for hard flooring and mats, and hard wheels are recommended for soft, carpeted flooring.
